In her final year at Whitecliffe College, Shawnee embarked on a transformative journey for her end-of-year exhibition, creating a series titled “Good 4 Sale.”
This project was inspired by the pervasive influence of advertising and media in our lives, which often commodifies the concept of “good.” Through this series, Shawnee explored what it means to sell the idea of “good” in the 21st century, raising questions about its value and impact on society. To enhance the viewer's experience, she integrated QR codes into the paintings, allowing spectators to scan them and witness animations layered over the artwork. This innovative approach aimed to create a dialogue between the physical and digital realms, reflecting the complexities of modern consumer culture.
During this time, Shawnee also began developing her vinyl cut stencil painting process, marking a significant evolution in her artistic technique. The series comprised three paintings that represented her first successful exploration of this method, setting the stage for future creative endeavours.
The series went on to be exhibited at Gow Langsford's Prelude: 2020 exhibition, described as "an opportunity to see works by some exceptional emerging artists, offering insight into current thinking in contemporary visual arts."
